During your first visit, Dr. Chapman will spend time with you to get to know you and understand your concerns and goals.  He will review your medical and dental history, as well as any medications you may be taking. This will be followed by:

  • A thorough oral and periodontal exam of your gums to check for gum bleeding and swelling, signs of infection, and gum recession; your jawbone, to help detect the breakdown of bone surrounding your teeth; and your teeth, to determine their proper alignment and if any are sensitive, loose and how they fit together when you bite.
  • An assessment of the depth of the spaces, known as periodontal pockets, between your teeth and gums. Pockets greater than 3mm are a sign of gum disease which left untreated can progress to tooth loss.
  •  X-rays, to show the bone levels between your teeth to check for possible bone loss.
  • Once the exam is completed, Dr. Chapman will in most cases immediately discuss with you his diagnosis and recommendations for treatment.  He will answer your questions and you will have a thorough understanding of what your situation is and what needs to be done for optimal health.  At your examination and consultation appointment, we will in most cases, be able to provide you with an estimate of fees for the treatment that Dr. Chapman has recommended for you in our office.

Meet our dedicated and friendly team:

All our professionals at Highlands Ranch Periodontics & Implant Dentistry maintain the highest levels of accreditation and pursue ongoing education to stay abreast of the latest techniques and trends in periodontics and implantology. So that you may get to know us a bit, here is some biographical information on us:

Thomas J. Chapman, DDS, Hello! I am the founder and owner of Highlands Ranch Periodontics & Implant Dentisty. Dentistry is a second career for me. After twelve years in retail management, I decided that a career change was needed to fulfill my life. Opening and managing stores for Kids R Us was just not what I wanted to do for the rest of my career.

After returning to undergraduate school to take courses needed to apply to dental school, I began to search for the right dental school for me. The University of Maryland Dental School was at the top of the list. It is consistently ranked as one of the very top dental schools in the country. It is also the very first dental school in the country! By the end of my first year, I had fallen in love with periodontics and the idea of saving teeth. Becoming a Periodontist became my goal!

I completed my residency in periodontics and implants at the University of Maryland. My family and I moved to Denver in 1996 and I began practicing periodontics! I founded my own practice in Highlands Ranch in 2002 after working in a very busy office for five years. My goal was to own a periodontal and implant practice where each patient is treated as a person, not just a "case". Our foundation core values at Highlands Ranch Periodontics & Implant Dentistry include excellent clinical care, effective two-way communication, strong ethics, and shared decision making in a comfortable and enjoyable environment for everyone. With the help of my staff, I am quite proud to say that we have achieved this goal! Owning my own practice allows me the time to spend with each of my patients so that I can get to know them, their goals and concerns. I enjoy acting as an advisor for my patients dental health and assisting them in achieving their long term health goals.

On the personal side, I am the very proud father of twins, Ashley and Ryan, who make Denver their home. It's hard to believe that they started first grade at the same time that I started dental school! Harper, our granddaughter, has enriched our lives beyond belief! In my spare time, I love racing my Formula Ford race car with Rocky Mountain Vintage Racing, traveling, cooking and exploring Denver's many fine restaurants. My wife, Stephanie, and I live in the Highlands neighborhood of Denver.

Justine - Receptionist. Justine is the newest member of our staff and is who you will see when you walk in the door.  She has several years of dental office experience especially in periodontics.  She knows insurance inside and out and is very knowledgible in the claims process.

Kelly - Dental Assistant.  Kelly was born and raised in Eastern Colorado where she still resides.  She is the proud Mon of one daughter, Keely, who is a senior in high school.  Kelly is also a "dogmom" to her 7 pound chihuahua named Kiki.  As a farm girl, she enjoys cattle, horses & dogs.  At one time, she raised ostriches which she found to be very interesting.  Kelly enjoys spending time with her daughter, family & friends, gardening, water skiing and riding motorcycles.  More recently, traveling has replaced roping.

Kelly has been in general dentistry for over 14 years.  She is now very happy to be branching off into the specialty of Periodontics and Implants.  She enjoys meeting and getting to know patients, and helping them feel at ease and comfortable.

Ken - Registered Dental Hygienist: Ken grew up in Aurora, Colorado. He has been married for 20+ years and has two children, Connor and Kira. He received his undergraduate degree at the University of Northern Colorado and his master's degree at the University of Denver. He began his dental career as a dental assistant for 3 years before receiving dental hygiene degree from Laramie County Community College in 2007. Ken enjoys getting to know our patients and helping them achieve their dental goals, and ultimately, long term dental health! Just as people have personal preferences when it comes to the amount of pressure that a massage therapist uses, the same is true when it comes to a hygienist. Let Ken know about any preferences that you may have and he will accomadate your wishes. In his free time, Ken enjoys spending time with his family, drawing and aviation.
